. . . [5 lines introduction] Connecticut, December 29, 1758.
Grateful reflections upon the divine goodness in the
remarkable success vouchsafed his majesty's arms, especially
in North-America, in the current year, in a poetical essay,
occasioned by the happy news of the late acquisition of Fort
DuQuesne, on the Ohio, by General Forbes.
1.
My muse, assume a grateful strain,
And make his goodness known;
Who saw his people's anxious pain,
And sent salvation down.
2.
The neighbouring French, a restless brood,
Our sovereign's rights invade;
Barbarians that delight in blood,
They call in to their aid.
